Families: Introduction to CyberSafety

Why CyberSafety Instead of Internet Safety?

horizontal line

The term Internet Safety brings to mind safe practices using the computer to surf the Internet. However with today's technology, much of the connectivity is not through use of the computer, but rather through cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDA's), blackberry devices, or a number of other Internet capable devices. Much of the technology that students use works under the radar of the sophisticated technological security solutions that schools or parents use in efforts to protect them. It is imperative that in addition to the firewalls, filters, and tracking technology, the students and communities must learn to be smart online.

If you are a parent or concerned adult, the parents' section of this website describes Georgia's community program designed for you, points you to tutorials that assist you in learning about computers and the internet, and provides you with links to resources that hopefully help you provide a safer environment for your children.

The kids' section provides safety suggestions and links to fun sites that help them learn about how to be safer in cyberspace.

The teens' section includes straight talk to the group most targeted by predators in cyberspace. They will find safety suggestions that cover important strategies to use as well as links to sites that bring the message of safety to them in relevant ways.
