It
is often stated by parents that they feel their child knows
more about the computer than they do. Our kids may be more
advanced with the new technologies, but they are not as
experienced or mature as their parents are and they need
their parents' involvement in this part of their lives.
With this in mind, the Georgia ICAC Task Force has focused
on education and prevention in addition to investigation.
The Georgia ICAC and The Georgia Emergency Management Agency
(GEMA) have worked collaboratively to implement a statewide
program of volunteers trained to give classes and presentations
to communities and parent groups as needed. The volunteers,
consisting of officers from local police stations, sheriff's
offices, and professional organizations, are available for
short presentations covering topics of interest. Seven-hour
classes based on the program, The
Internet and Your Child, are also available and cover
the following topics:
Computer
hardware and software basics
Windows basics
Getting connected to the Internet
Internet addressing
Newsgroups
E-mail
Hacking
Protecting your privacy
Internet fraud
Sex crimes
Internet chats
Filtering and blocking unwanted sites with software
Searching the Internet for information on you or your child
Internet safety summary
